The Mumbai-bound flight of Singapore Airlines mistakenly made an approach to land at the Juhu airport on Monday morning. After the error was picked up, the aircraft changed its course and after a go-around, it landed on the correct runway of the Mumbai airport.
The the flight SQ422 was cleared to land on Mumbai runway number 09.
The two runways, Juhu and Mumbai, are separated about a kilometer and the Mumbai air traffic control has an alert on this for all pilots.
The Juhu runway is much shorter than the Mumbai runway and so an erroneous landing onto the wrong runway would have resulted in an over run.
"The Singapore pilot was in touch with the Mumbai air traffic control and it was supposed to make an approach for runway 09 of the Mumbai airport. As the aircraft flew over the Arabian sea and came close to Mumbai and the pilots saw the Juhu runway and headed for it," said a source.
"The error was rectified on time though. The aircraft then lined up for Mumbai airport runway, did a missed approach and a serious incident was averted," said a source.
It landed safely at the Mumbai airport around 10.30am. A statement from the airline is awaited.
