Air Berlin increased number of passengers in May

In May 2010, Air Berlin, Germany’s second-largest airline company, welcomed 2,905,322 passengers on board, i.e. an increase of 1.8 percent (May 2009: 2,853,716 passengers, including those traveling on the acquired TUIfly routes). Fleet capacity utilization decreased to 74.0 percent, i.e. by 2.7 percentage points (May 2009: 76.7 percent). Due to the problems caused by the presence of volcanic ash in the atmosphere and the reluctant booking behavior related thereto, revenue per available seat kilometer (ASK) decreased by 6.9 percent, i.e. from 5.88 to 5.48 Eurocents.

For the period from January to May 2010, Air Berlin transported a total of 11,205,691 passengers (including those traveling on the acquired TUIfly routes), i.e. 1.8 percent less than in the corresponding period of the previous year (2009: 11,415,854 passengers). Fleet capacity utilization for the first five months of the year decreased by 1.9 percentage points to 71.9 percent (2009: 73.8 percent). Accumulated capacity for the January to May 2010 period in-creased slightly (+ 0.7 percent).
