The low-cost airline began its service between West Virginia’s capital and Orlando on Thursday. Passengers aboard AirTran’s first flight to Charleston were treated to a water cannon salute and personal greetings from Gov. Joe Manchin when they arrived at Yeager Airport.
AirTran spokesman Christopher White said Charleston fit the company’s business model, which calls for low-cost service in markets where the passenger base is “overcharged and underserved.”
The airline flies between Charleston and Orlando on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
AirTran now flies to 63 U.S. cities.
