US Airways cut 50 to 75 union ground service jobs at Tucson International Airport Tuesday, according to a corporate spokeswoman.
The cuts, which include baggage handlers, ticket counter employees, gate agents and other ground positions, included some workers supplied under contract to another airline by US Airways, said airline spokeswoman Valerie Wunder.
She refused to specify exactly how many workers were cut at TIA or how many of them worked directly on US Airways flights versus under the contract arrangement.
Wunder said the employees were offered severance packages if they turned down offers of jobs at other airports with US Airways service.
A spokesperson for the International Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 2559 in Phoenix, which represents workers at Sky Harbor and Tucson International Airport, said she had heard about the job cuts but didn’t have any details. Other calls to the union local, district and national offices for information provided no details.
The positions at TIA were part of 233 jobs cut at 10 airports served by US Airways, Wunder said.
