Lufthansa to Transfer Half of Its Narrow-Body Fleet to Subsidiaries”

Lufthansa Group is moving ahead with a substantial restructuring of its short-haul operations by transferring about half of its narrow-body aircraft fleet to its subsidiary airlines.

Under the plan, Lufthansa will shift numerous Airbus A320 family aircraft from its mainline operations to carriers such as Eurowings, Lufthansa City Airlines and other affiliated units. This redistribution is designed to enhance operational efficiencies, reduce unit costs and consolidate duties within the group.

The initiative is motivated by rising cost pressures, labour constraints and the need to optimise fleet utilisation across the group’s network. By shifting part of the fleet to subsidiaries with lower cost bases, Lufthansa aims to maintain competitiveness in the short-haul segment while preserving its full-service operations

Looking ahead, the group expects the transfer of aircraft to help align operations with strategic targets of higher profitability, simplified fleet types and improved network flexibility. Implementation of the new structure is phased, and the company will engage with key stakeholders including unions and regulators to ensure a smooth transition.
