Virgin Nigeria, the country’s airline flag carrier, has announced the suspension of long-haul flights to London and Johannesburg.
The airline will stop all flights to those countries at the end of January.
Virgin’s main competitors on the routes, British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Arik Air, a Nigerian private airline, will continue to service the routes.
Rising debts and high operating costs have been reasons given for the cut, although it has been known for some time that Virgin Atlantic would like to dispose of its stake in the Lagos-based airline.
Virgin Nigeria is 51 percent held by Nigerian institutional investors and 49 per cent by Virgin Atlantic.
