AirAsiaX hiring pilots and cabin crew

KUALA LUMPUR: Confident in the face of the deteriorating global economy, Malaysian budget carrier AirAsia X is hiring pilots to expand its routes to China, India, South Korea and Japan.

CEO Azran Osman Rani sees “a lot of business opportunities for us”, AFP reports.

Bookings for its direct London flight on its leased Airbus 340-300, due to start on March 11, are overwhelming, he says, with 30,000 seats sold – probablybecause its tickets are less than half the price of regular flights.

AirAsia X will fly five times a week between Kuala Lumpur and Stansted Airport on the outskirts of London, and Azran says the carrier is looking to expand its routes next year into northern India and to Beijing. In 2010 it aims to target South Korea as well as Japan – Tokyo, Hokkaido and Kyushu.

“We are still hiring pilots and cabin crew,” he says.

Richard Branson’s Virgin Group has a 20% stake in the airline
