On Friday 4 December, Avinor and Bergen Airport, Flesland celebrated Norwegian’s launch of six new direct routes from the airport. “This is the biggest single development we have ever had.” says airport manager Dag Aksnes. The new destinations are Copenhagen, Stockholm, Barcelona, Rome, Crete and Antalya. There will also be more departures to London, Dubrovnik and Split, advises a news release from Norwegian.

Hard work

“This is a success story for the work Avinor and Bergen Airport, Flesland have put into route development,“ says Aksnes.

He explains that the airport, together with industry and leading politicians in the region, have been working systematically to get the new routes into place.

“We are impressed with Norwegian taking this step at a tough time for aviation, while we also see this as recognition of the work that Avinor and the airport have put in,” says Aksnes.

Satisfied mayor

The new routes are expected to increase visitors to the region by more than 80,000, which could increase turnover for the travel and tourism industry by NOK 400 million.

“We want to play our part in developing West Norway as a fantastic destination for foreign visitors,” says Bjørn Kjos, CEO of Norwegian.

And Bergen’s mayor Gunnar Bakke is pleased with this new development.

“This is a fantastic Christmas present for our region,” he said to the newspaper Bergens Tidende.

The new routes come into service with effect from 28 March 2010.
