Indonesia Receives Its First Airbus A400M Military Transport Aircraft

The Indonesian Air Force has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A400M as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme. The delivery ceremony was held at Halim Air Force Base in Jakarta, following the aircraft’s completion and handover at Airbus’ final assembly line in Seville, Spain. A second aircraft is scheduled for delivery in 2026.

With this addition, Indonesia becomes the tenth operator of the A400M worldwide. Thanks to its multi-role capability, extended range and payload capacity, the A400M is expected to significantly enhance Indonesia’s strategic and humanitarian airlift operations.

Versatile Multi-Mission Capability

The aircraft delivered to Indonesia is configured for:

  • Heavy and oversized cargo transport
  • Troop and special forces deployment
  • Medical evacuation (MEDEVAC)
  • Humanitarian and disaster relief missions

The A400M can carry payloads of up to 37 tonnes and operate from short or semi-prepared airstrips—an essential capability for reaching remote regions across the Indonesian archipelago.

Aerial Firefighting Option Under Evaluation

In parallel, Indonesia is evaluating the integration of the modular A400M aerial firefighting kit, capable of deploying up to 20,000 litres of water or retardant in a single drop.

This capability is expected to provide a significant boost to national wildfire response efforts, particularly in hard-to-access areas.

Comprehensive Training and Support

Airbus will support the Indonesian Air Force with full training, logistics and technical assistance to ensure a smooth introduction into service and long-term operational readiness.
