Austrian Airlines to Retire Embraer E195 Fleet as Part of Fleet Simplification Strategy

Lufthansa Group carrier Austrian Airlines has begun phasing out its Embraer E195 regional jets, marking a significant step in the airline’s long-term fleet modernisation and simplification programme.

The decision aligns with Austrian Airlines’ strategy to reduce fleet complexity and focus on a streamlined aircraft portfolio centred on the Airbus A320 family for short- and medium-haul operations, alongside the Boeing 787 Dreamliner for long-haul services.

Transition to a Two-Type Fleet Structure

Austrian Airlines currently operates 17 Embraer E195 aircraft, which will be gradually withdrawn from service by the end of 2028. As part of this transition, the airline plans to expand its Airbus narrowbody fleet with the introduction of six additional Airbus A320neo aircraft, each configured with 180 seats. The first A320neo is expected to enter service during the summer of next year.

The retirement of the E195 fleet supports operational efficiency by simplifying maintenance, crew training, and spare parts management, while also contributing to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

Boeing 787 Fleet Expansion Underway

On the long-haul side, Austrian Airlines continues to build its Boeing 787-9 fleet. After introducing its first Dreamliners last year, the airline plans to increase the number of 787s to 12 aircraft by the end of 2028. These aircraft will replace the carrier’s ageing Boeing 777-200ER and Boeing 767-300ER fleets.

Embraer E195s to Be Reallocated and Sold

As part of the phase-out process, 13 of the E195 aircraft will be transferred within the Lufthansa Group to Italian regional carrier Air Dolomiti, while the remaining four aircraft are expected to be sold externally. The transition process is set to begin in early 2026, with the second E195 scheduled to leave the fleet in February 2026.

Austrian Airlines introduced the 120-seat Embraer E195 into its fleet nearly a decade ago, where it played a key role in supporting regional connectivity across Europe.

Vienna Base Sees Increased Airbus Presence

Following the completion of the fleet transition, Austrian Airlines’ Airbus fleet based in Vienna is expected to grow to 46 aircraft, further reinforcing the airport’s role as a key hub within the Lufthansa Group network.
